Studies have shown that girls as young as six are influenced by gender stereotypes, and that role models from the entertainment they choose can have a lasting effect. For those of us with little girls, this message is certainly an important one, and with International Women’s Day observed this month around the world, we’re proud to say that Netflix is home to girls who mean business. That’s something all kids can get behind! Whether it’s Violet’s quick wit, Elena’s activist mentality, or Deidra & Laney’s unorthodox thinking, there’s something for every girl to relate to– and strong female characters aren’t just important for girls! Boys are growing up with Eleven saving the crew and Tip showing that true friendship knows no bounds.

From some of Em’s favorites like Dragons: Race to the Edge and Project Mc² to some of my guys’ must-watches like Marvel’s Jessica Jones, and family favorite A Series of Unfortunate Events, some of our top picks across Netflix all feature women and girls who aren’t afraid to stand up and be strong. What girl-power-driven Netflix shows are you watching this month? We’ve got some suggestions below for ones you can start in on right now!

Whether it’s in the classroom, Troll Market or Hawkins Lab Netflix is bringing a whole new definition of girl power to the table.

This month, Julie Andrews makes her Netflix debut in Julie’s Greenroom. Brought to life by the Jim Henson Company, the enriching show advocates for the arts and the positive impact creativity can have on every child’s life. With an array of very special guests (Idina Menzel, Sara Bareilles and Alec Baldwin to name a few), Julie’s Greenroom might be a show you turn on for the kids but find yourself staying until the final curtain call.
