Netflix #StreamTeam: Celebrating Great Female Role Models

Studies have shown that girls as young as six are influenced by gender stereotypes, and that role models from the entertainment they choose can have a lasting effect. For those of us with little girls, this message is certainly an important one, and with International Women’s Day observed this month around the world, we’re proud to say that Netflix is home to girls who mean business. That’s something all kids can get behind! Whether it’s Violet’s quick wit, Elena’s activist mentality, or Deidra & Laney’s unorthodox thinking, there’s something for every girl to relate to– and strong female characters aren’t just important for girls! Boys are growing up with Eleven saving the crew and Tip showing that true friendship knows no bounds.

From some of Em’s favorites like Dragons: Race to the Edge and Project Mc² to some of my guys’ must-watches like Marvel’s Jessica Jones, and family favorite A Series of Unfortunate Events, some of our top picks across Netflix all feature women and girls who aren’t afraid to stand up and be strong. What girl-power-driven Netflix shows are you watching this month? We’ve got some suggestions below for ones you can start in on right now!

Whether it’s in the classroom, Troll Market or Hawkins Lab Netflix is bringing a whole new definition of girl power to the table.

6 GIFs, 6 moments where girls stole the spotlight on Netflix. When it comes to saving the day, these girls don’t need an extra hand.

This month, Julie Andrews makes her Netflix debut in Julie’s Greenroom. Brought to life by the Jim Henson Company, the enriching show advocates for the arts and the positive impact creativity can have on every child’s life. With an array of very special guests (Idina Menzel, Sara Bareilles and Alec Baldwin to name a few), Julie’s Greenroom might be a show you turn on for the kids but find yourself staying until the final curtain call.

Netflix #StreamTeam November: Welcome Home

netflixjanuary

With start of the holiday season just around the corner, it’s certainly a time for family and tradition to take center stage. It’s one of the reasons that this is my favorite time of year– coming together as a family and appreciating not only all of the good things that have happened in the past year, but also each other for being there as part of them. So naturally, it’s excellent to see that Netflix has something special for all kinds of families this year

Whether your family embodies the spirit of  or is more like the group-hugging Fullers or slightly strange Byers, there’s undoubtedly a group to reflect  the way your family celebrates the holidays (and the other days in between!) And with the premiere of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life on November 25th, who could forget the fast-talking Gilmores? From Friday night dinners to a daily cup of coffee (or three) at Luke’s, the Gilmores are full of unique quirks and traditions that rival even the most beloved Netflix families. When it comes to dynamics and traditions, how does your family compare?

Find out what to watch next on Netflix based on your favorite family units, and try to share the remote this holiday season.

Netflix #StreamTeam August: Sing Along With “Beat Bugs”!

netflix-logo

Family movie night. Car-ride duets. Weekend dance fests. The best moments happen when the family comes together — and much of that happens over music and entertainment. It’s why 40% of families say they routinely watch all sorts of shows together. It’s also why you grow nostalgic for the music your parents loved and eventually want to pass it down to your kids as well.

With the new Netflix original series Beat Bugs, inspired by the music of the Beatles, your next family sing-along can be “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” Thanks to five charming and energetic bug-like creatures (Jay, Kumi, Crick, Buzz and Walter), families have the opportunity to come together over kid-friendly storylines and the best damn music ever made — recorded by today’s top artists, including Jennifer Hudson, P!nk, Sia and Eddie Vedder.

We couldn’t get enough of “Beat Bugs” in our house– the fun and imaginative uses of classic songs had the whole family dancing and singing along! And that’s just the beginning of the awesome movies and TV shows premiering on Netflix this month. Read on to see some of our highlights from August’s additions to the Netflix catalog!
