King’s Hawaiian Slider Sunday

King’s Hawaiian Slider Sunday

Our family just loves sliders! I know if I ask anyone what they want for Sunday dinner the answer will be SLIDERS! Recently our family had a chance to test out King’s Hawaiian Slider Sunday. Every Sunday is Slider Sunday! This Sunday I went with a family fave- pork sliders, so delicious! Click here to see our 3decades3kids King’s Hawaiian prep video.

Wondering how King’s Hawaiian began?  Back in the 1950’s in Hilo, Hawaii Robert R. Taira, the Hawaiian-born son of Japanese immigrants had an idea! Robert graduated at the top of his baking class, opened his first bake shop: Robert’s Bakery. That’s where the very first soft round loaves of the Original Hawaiian Sweet bread were made. The dedication still goes on today many years later with expansions and King’s Hawaiian being available in our local stores!

Our family created a Slider Bar for the first time ever, but it will not be the last! I cooked up some pork chops smothered in BBQ sauce and pineapples and when they were done I shredded the pork and added more BBQ sauce.  You can visit King’s Hawaiian by clicking here.

Peeps® and the Holidays- Perfect Together! #PeepsHoliday

Peeps® and the Holidays- Perfect Together!

Every year there seems to be a staple in our house when it comes to baking and our official candy bar, Peeps®! When I think about it, it’s kind of funny to me. As a child I only knew one type of Peeps, the little yellow guy. Now, flash forward a million years and my kids have Peeps® of every kind for every holiday, movie and more. Our family loves to check out all the new Peeps® when the holidays roll around. peepsholiday

Recently we were thrilled to sample a box of Holiday Peeps®! Christmas at our house is magical and we really try to make it extra special with baking and hot cocoa. Peeps® is the perfect addition to creating traditions and filling our tummies with yum! Our latest development around here is to add Peeps to our hot cocoa. It started at Halloween this year with a little ghost added to a cup of hot chocolate. So cute, easy and delish. It was a no brainer that when the holiday season arrived we would be adding a little snowman to each of the hot cocoas being made.

As we get closer to Christmas we will be using Peeps® to adorn our Gingerbread house and our cookies. I also heard that Santa will be dropping off some stuffed Peeps® to top off the stockings! Did you know that Peeps® has lollipops? They are incredible. You can check out the full line of Peeps in the following link. We even have a special 20% discount code for you to get your holiday Peeps shopping started! http://www.peepsandcompany.com.

Please follow our instagram.com/3decades3kids for more baking and holiday ideas with Peepsbrand! We grabbed some total inspiration about our upcoming gingerbread house when we visited Great Wolf Lodge! They have a lifesized gingerbread house that uses over fifty pounds of Peeps to adorn it! It is a sight to behold and my kids are definitely using it as their guide this year.

Some or our favorite Peeps® finds were: PEEPS® Large Banana Crème Flavored Minion, PEEPS® Vanilla Crème Chicks Pop, PEEPS® Marshmallow Minions, PEEPS® Large Marshmallow Snowmen, PEEPS® Candy Cane Flavored Marshmallow Chicks, PEEPS® Gingerbread-Flavored Marshmallow Gingerbread Men, PEEPS® Marshmallow Trees. PEEPS® Marshmallow Snowmen, PEEPS® Chocolate Mousse-Flavored Marshmallow Reindeer, PEEPS® Holiday Pop, PEEPS® Holiday Plush toy, Mike and Ike Merry Cherry Candy, PEEPS® Lollipop

quakersteak2

If you are like our family we are always looking for a great Dinner with Santa during the holidays. This year we heard about one that sounds great and can save a few bucks along the way. Although we have never been to Quaker Steak & Lube, there are friends that are telling me is definitely worth it! Quaker Steak & Lube, or The Lube to loyalists, the award-winning casual-dining concept known for its Best Wings USA and more than 25 signature sauces, today announced that it will rev its engines – and gift-giving spirit – during the holiday season with toy drives at its Brick, Edison and Pohatcong restaurants throughout the month of December. Shifting gears, The Lube also announced that it will host Dinner with Santa at its three New Jersey restaurants on Monday, December 21 from 5 – 8PM.

Through December 23, diners who visit The Lube in Brick, located at 1036 Cedar Bridge Ave., or Pohatcong, located at 1304 US Route 22, are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy to help brighten the holidays for local families in need. In Brick, toys will be donated to Visitation Relief Center, which offers a one-stop recovery and relief experience to aid families and individuals in Monmouth and Ocean Counties affected by Superstorm Sandy. In Edison, toys will be donated to Hands of Hope Food Pantry, an organization focused on meeting the challenge of alleviating  hunger and making a difference in the community. In Pohatcong, toys will be donated to Northwest New Jersey Community Action Partnership (NORWESCAP), whose mission is to improve the lives of low income individuals and families in Northwest New Jersey through programs and education to foster self-sufficiency. Check out more about it and to find a location near you here: http://thelube.com/

“We are proud to once again partner with the Visitation Relief Center, Hands of Hope and NORWESCAP for the 2015 holiday season,” said Victor Russomanno, area director, Quaker Steak & Lube. “Charitable giving is a focus within Doherty Enterprises and the restaurants we operate, and we’re happy to lend a hand to our neighbors in need throughout the year, and especially during the holidays. We also look forward to spreading holiday cheer to guests during our Dinner with Santa, and we are excited for families to join us to enjoy some festive fun with the kids.”

The Brick and Pohatcong restaurants will also host their final Off-Road Truck Nights of the year on Thursday, December 17 and Sunday, December 20, respectively. Off-road vehicle owners who visit the restaurants on these dates are encouraged to contribute to the holiday toy drives in each location to receive a 15 percent discount on their meals.

On Monday, December 21, Santa Claus comes to town at Quaker Steak and Lube’s restaurants in Brick, Edison and Pohatcong. From 5 – 8PM, guests have the opportunity to take photos with Santa – and get in those last-minute gift wishes – while dining on award-winning wings, beefed-up burgers, custom-built combos and more. Families will also enjoy a Kids Eat Free special, and children ages 12 and under can choose any entrée on the Quaker Steak & Lube Kids Lube Cruiser menu, with options including Grilled Boneless Wings, Top Gear Tenders, the Chevy Cheeseburger and more. Reservations are encouraged, and guests must bring their own cameras for photos with Santa.

Looking for the perfect present? Since you can’t stuff stockings with wings, a Quaker Steak & Lube gift card is the next best thing. Now through December 31, guests will receive a $5 bonus card to use during their next visit to The Lube with every $25 gift card purchase.

Quaker Steak & Lube offers a lineup of craveable food and supercharged events, combined with unique décor including motorcycles and race cars suspended from ceilings, plus gas station and automotive memorabilia.

Turkey Chili-Topped Baked Potatoes

Prep time: 10 minutes   Cook Time: 1 hour          Serves: 4

Ingredients

• 4 large baking potatoes

• 1 Tablespoon Stop & Shop olive oil

• ½ lb. ground turkey breast

• 1 Tablespoon reduced-sodium taco seasoning mix

• 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes with green chilies, undrained

• ½ cup Stop & Shop shredded cheddar cheese

• Toppings (optional): sour cream, sliced green onions

Steps

1. Preheat oven to 425°F. Place potatoes on a rimmed baking sheet; prick several times with a fork. Bake 1 hour or until fork-tender. Remove from oven.

2. Meanwhile, in a large nonstick skillet heat oil over medium heat. Add turkey; cook until no longer pink (165°F), stirring to break up turkey. Stir in seasoning mix and tomatoes; simmer 5 minutes or until heated through and slightly thickened. Remove from heat; keep covered.

3. Cut potatoes open lengthwise; squeeze gently to open. Fluff potato pulp with a fork. Spoon turkey mixture evenly over potatoes, top with cheese and desired toppings, and serve.

Halftime Healthy

Healthy and tailgate foods don’t often go hand in hand, but Stop & Shop is offering a few better-for-you suggestions to help navigate the football festivities while still enjoying your favorites.

• Don’t go to a party hungry as you will most likely end up eating more. Eat a balanced breakfast and lunch beforehand with lean protein, fruits and vegetables. Include some exercise or activity during the day, which can help balance the calories.

• Try small portions of your favorite dishes and slow down at the buffet. It can take your brain about 20 minutes to recognize fullness.

• Remember the veggie tray! Fill half of your plate with a variety of available vegetables, but go easy on the dip.

• Prepare your tailgate favorites with a few simple recipe swaps like utilizing low fat dairy products or ground turkey, turkey bacon or leaner beef.

Two points for safety

Another way to ensure your party is a success is to remember to keep food safety top of mind throughout the day from preparation to clean up to prevent food-borne illness amongst your guests. Incorporate these tips into your preparations:

• To prevent cross-contamination, be sure to use soap and hot water to wash hands, utensils and surfaces that have touched raw meat or eggs.

• The best way to know if meat is cooked thoroughly is to use a meat thermometer and check the temperature. Before removing from the grill or oven, insert a meat thermometer halfway into the thickest part of the meat, making sure it does not go through to the other side. To prevent harmful bacteria such as E coli, cook meat and seafood to these recommended internal temperatures: ground beef hamburgers – 160oF; ground and whole poultry – 165oF; chops, steaks and roasts from beef, veal or lamb – 145oF for medium rare, 160oF for medium and 170oF for well done; pork chops and roast – 145oF; and shrimp, lobster and crabs – cooked until the flesh is pearly and opaque.

• Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold to avoid bacteria growth. Also remember the two-hour rule. Perishable foods should be removed from the table and refrigerated promptly. When it doubt, throw it out.
