Give a Book, Get a Book Program Is Amazing
Disney Social Media Moms
Disney Social Media Moms
After spending twenty years as an inner city teacher and being a mom of three, I have learned one thing about children, they love to read! They also love to be read to at any age and they love to have their own book. We can probably all remember a special book we loved as a child, a special book that our mom or dad or teacher or grandma read to us. For me it was Cinderella. I could listen to the story over and over and over. I’m so sure my mom had the book memorized from reading it to me so many times. I remember the day she bought me the book. I wanted that book so badly. I could not believe she actually bought it and it was MINE, all mine. I believe it’s because of that book and my mom reading it to me that I have always loved reading and reading to others and still sitting down with a good book, a page turner. It’s because of that one simple book that my children love reading, that my students loved reading. All it took was ONE book, one little book. It brings tears to my eyes now to think of how much I love reading and how important reading is to a child.
Recently during the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration I was beyond thrilled to be introduced to the Disney Junior’s Give a Book, Get a Book. Bravo, Disney! You know the importance of reading! Disney and First Book will provide for the donation of up to one million books to U.S. communities in need and will present families with free digital books from Disney Publishing Worldwide. Disney Junior’sGive a Book, Get a Book. Storytelling is the foundation of the initiative designed to inspire parents and caregivers to spend time each day sharing stories that help develop the critical thinking, vocabulary and language skills a preschooler needs. The program includes a redemption code offering a free Disney Digital book and a way for families to experience giving back by donating books to the community of their choice. Disney Junior’s Give a Book, Get a Book, also includes public service announcements, free storytime events at Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Disney Store locations, and interactive Radio Disney events.
Honestly, I never thought I would be in the same room as LeVar Burton, a lifelong children’s literacy advocate Cofounder and Curator-in-Chief of the award-winning Reading Rainbow app. His words were like music as he spoke about the importance of building literacy and of storytelling in the digital age. We also had the pure pleasure of being treated to a celebrity reading by Disney Junior stars Ariel Winter and Tim Gunn (of “Sofia the First”) and David Arquette (of “Jake and the Never Land Pirates”).
Our family was thrilled to meet up with Genevieve Goings (of Disney Junior’s “Choo Choo Soul”), who hosts the Give a Book, Get a Book public service announcements on Disney Channel. She emceed the event and had all the moms singing along with her to All aboard the Choo Choo Train! Okay, I admit it, we loved it! She is amazing and the perfect spokesperson for the program. If you frequent the Disney Store or watch Disney Junior, you will definitely see her explaining the new Give a Book, Get a Book!
You can now take advantage of an all-new website, GiveaBookGetaBook.com, featuring tools and resources for parents and caregivers that promote the value of storytelling and offer interactive activities. Now at Disney Store locations and later this summer at other nationwide retailers, there are two ways to Give a Book, Get a Book. For a limited time, with the purchase of any specially-marked Disney Junior book or product, receipts or packaging will include a redemption code allowing kids and families to direct the donation of a book to First Book in the region of their choice and to access a free Disney Digital Book to share as a family. Additionally, Give a Book, Get a Book bookmarks with redemption codes will be distributed to visitors at participating public libraries and Radio Disney events throughout the summer. With the help of families across the United States, Disney and First Book will donate up to one million books through this program.

Disney Social Media Moms Celebration – A First Timer’s Experience! #DisneySMMoms
Disney Social Media Moms Celebration
A First Timer’s Experience
Being invited to the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration is quite an honor. After years of watching all the tweets, posts, and pictures of all the past Celebrations I was just beside myself to see the spectacular invitation in my inbox this past February. Now, being invited is just the beginning. There is cheering in the house, planning, shopping, packing and counting down to the fun. What is so unique about this social media influencers celebration is that you can bring your family along with you. Yes, you don’t have to get a million babysitters lined up and leave behind your loved ones, they are right there with you. Since our family travels as a pack this was just music to our ears! So we packed and I read everything I could to try to get a grasp on what would happen, but compared to what was about to take place, I did not have a clue!
Before we knew it, our family of five loaded headed to the airport to go from the east coast across the country to the west coast and have our very first family visit at Disneyland!
From the moment we arrived at the Disneyland Resort I kind of figured out why they called it a celebration! The Disney Social Media Moms Celebration check in was a party onto itself. We were introduced to new friends, had a chance to chat with great brands, already started learning about Disney brands and had a chance to visit with some amazing Disney characters. The care taken at the check in was first rate. Each family was given their a private cast member to go over the itinerary and answer any questions we may have had at that time. Maxine Clark and Donald Driver nearly bringing me to tears with there stories. They really taught me just how powerful a story can be. Leanne Jakubowski and Gary Buchanan kept us smiling in the meantime with their cheerfulness and antics! There are other highlights that I am saving for separate posts and they may or may not include Maleficent and more! My brain is spinning as I write this, just thinking about everything that took place during those four days on the west coast!
Our days were spent learning and listening to as powerhouse after powerhouse took the the stage. With too many to name in just one post, as just a sampling, we were inspired by. There were private parties, meet and greets, family fun, but there was more. There was friend making, there was a connection-an energy that I have not seen at many of the other conferences I have attended. There was learning and above all, there was inspiration! Although this post cannot include everything I wanted to just let you know about the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration as a whole. It’s more than a conference, it is truly a celebration.

Advance Look at Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8! @NintendoAmerica
Advance Look at Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8
Launches May 30th- We Had A Sneak Peek
Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U doesn’t come out for almost a month (its official launch is May 30), but on May 1, we were treated to a special sneak peek at the game at Nintendo World in NYC. It looked INCREDIBLE! With 16 brand new tracks to race on, 16 remastered favorites from MarioKart games spanning throughout the franchise’s 20+ year history, MarioKart 8 is a splendid addition to the series.
The game is an excellent mix of new and classic elements, perfectly blending new features with the ones that fans loved about the other MarioKart games. Motorcycles (which debuted in MarioKart Wii) are still available to race in, and a slew of features from the 3DS’s MarioKart 7— including car customization, gliders, and underwater racing– are making their console debut. In addition to these mechanics, MarioKart 8 also introduces the ability to drive on walls and ceilings in certain areas of the tracks with new anti-gravity racing. When in anti-gravity mode, players can bump into each other to earn a speed boost and knock their friends off course, creating a double incentive to get aggressive in anti-gravity.
There are new characters and items too, like the Koopalings (who first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3 and have recently been seen in New Super Mario Bros. U) and the Super Horn, the first item in the MarioKart franchise that can deflect the dreaded Blue Spiny Shell. As a family that’s been hooked on MarioKart since it debuted on the Super Nintendo back in 1992, MarioKart 8 was a treat for all of us… though the jury’s still out on who’s the best! I get the feeling we’ll settle it soon enough– with plenty of tournaments at home once the game comes out at the end of the month!
Disclosure: No compensation was given for this post. My family received an invitation to test out the WiiU game and have a sneak peek before the launch on May 30th. All opinions are that of Diane Sullivan. Contact me at #ELGEorgia@aol.com.
