It our house The Little Mermaid is one of my favorite princesses. She’s someone that my daughter, like myself, has loved forever. Giveaway: Visit Medieval Times Lyndhurst NJ Where Kids Rule!

As you already know, our family recently  enjoyed the movie, The Kid Who Would Be King. During the press weekend we were treated to a class hosted by Medieval Times where the kids were taught some sword skills. They had the chance to meet up with some real Medieval Times knights and practice what they learned. Both the boys and girls really took things quite seriously as those wooden swords clanked together and whooshed in the air. From that moment on it was a given that we HAD to visit the Medieval Times castle in Lyndhurst, NJ! Whether you see the movie or not, Medieval Times is a perfect place to visit for both children and adults. We have been #MTfans forever and have celebrated many happy occasions at the Lyndhurst Castle throughout the years. It’s a perfect place for family fun, date night, birthdays, anniversaries and holidays! As for our most recent visit, we were definitely spinning off of the movie, The Kid Who Could Be King! It’s such a perfect match up between screen and reality. 

Our visit to Medieval Times started with arrived 75 minutes early. Why do we arrive that early? Well, I definitely would recommend that if you visit you arrive at this time, too! At seventy five minutes before show time you can be there for the Queen’s Welcome! The Queen and servers and trumpeters all come outside of the castle and welcome everyone to the castle. The trumpeters trumpet! The Queen invites everyone to join her inside of the castle. It’s definitely something that you will enjoy if you can make it there early. Arriving at that time also gives you time to enjoy the inside grand lobby. There is a picture opp on the way in with the Queen herself and also the sword in the stone! It’s amazing!

Once inside the grand lobby we always just take time to enjoy the look. You will feel like you are transported into medieval times. There are drinks available with an array of souvenir goblet and glasses. There is even a knight’s cup for the kids. During the pre show time you can see people being knighted by the Queen and mingle around to the gift shoppe and maybe even take a stroll through the dungeon, if you dare. Before you know it, it’s time to be seated in your preselected color section that matches the color of the knight you will be cheering for during the show. Since we were invited to be VIP on the Queen’s List we were treated to front row seating, a special entrance, a flag with our knight’s color (we had the black and white knight) and a take home photo.  Our family was quickly seated and started to get ready for the show. Every single time we enter the  arena it’s always the same, our family just stops for a second and looks around. It’s just amazing to be inside of and you kind of forget the outside world even exists for the time you are inside. 

It wasn’t long after being seated that the activities began. Our server introduced himself and before you know it we were feasting on delicious tomato soup, half of a chicken, garlic bread and corn on the cobb! Wow! Did I mention that there is NO silverware with your dinner. I mean, you are feasting with the Queen and it is medieval life! Of course you don’t have to worry, there are plenty of  wet wipes, so dig in and feast away. The food is absolutely delicious. There is even dessert!

As your family dines the show goes on right in front of you. There are fancy Spanish horses that preform for the Queen followed by the knights dueling and showing off their skills. There is also falconry in it’s finest form. The falcon is definitely one of my favorite parts of the show! We cheered and waved our flags as the knights jousted one by one until a final winner was in the house. Along the way each time the knight of your color wins he is given flowers from the Queen that he tosses out to the ladies. Emm is lucky enough each and every time to get a flower tossed to her!

Breakfast With Elf On The Shelf At Gaylord Palms

You may love them. You may hate them. But if you have a child who is into the magic of Christmas you most likely have a visitor in your house that arrives just after Thanksgiving and stays on until Christmas Eve. Yes, you know who I am talking about, those adorable, sweet, mischievous Elf on the Shelf! In our house we have two, Cupcake and Snowflake. They don’t follow any of the rules and generally do whatever they want during the advent season. They sure are fun to watch and our family also enjoys watches all the antics that take place around the world when it comes to Elf on the Shelf.

Did I mention we also have a official reindeer? We got him on one of our trips to Gaylord Palms in Orlando Florida where Christmas is celebrated to the max. There is a bigger than life gift shop with a full section dedicated to the Elf on the Shelf and friends. You can get more Elf friends there, pets for your elf, clothes, recipe books and more. It’s a dream come true for any family that hosts an elf during the month of December.So, let me back up a little bit. This past Christmas season our family headed to Gaylord Palms for the second year in a row. Gaylord Palms is a spectacular resort that is a mini city onto itself. It’s a place you can literally get lost in it’s so big. Thank goodness they have their own app to help you navigate the resort. Our visit was to enjoy Ice- A Christmas Story which is definitely something you want to put on our to do list for the next holiday season. While visiting we were invited to experience the one and only, Breakfast With Elf on the Shelf! Yes, you heard me right! 

Gaylord Palms hosts a character breakfast every year during the holidays. This year it was Breakfast With Elf on the Shelf. It wasn’t long after being seated that we were joined by Santa’s Official Scout Elves who gladly interacted with us and posed for pictures. The breakfast is set in an enchanting atrium which is the perfect backdrop for a million holiday pics. Our family was able to enjoy a  wonderful delicious buffet spread. There was so much to choose from including a personalized omelette station, freshly made french toast, waffles and more. There are also classic breakfast favorites and stations manned by the chef.  Of course there are a fresh breads and muffins, delicious fresh fruit and basically anything you can think of to dine on for breakfast.  Coffee, tea and juices are brought directly to your table for a refreshing treat.

Book Giveaway and Q&A With Martin Niewood Author of the New Novel, The Wilted Flower District 

Question: Tell us what The Wilted Flower District is all about.

Martin Niewood: The Wilted Flower District is the story of Violet Noone who at sixteen is thrown into a world of deception and betrayal when her sister, Ophelia, missing and presumed dead for the last four years, suddenly reenters her life. The story takes place in a fantastical world of the Domain also known as the afterlife. Ophelia’s reappearance sends Violet down a rabbit hole causing her to question everything in her life. The book is a fun mystery in an unusual setting that will hopefully force readers to question things about their lives and may provide some unexpected answers.

Q: This is the second book in your Forgotten Violets series. How do the books relate and can they be read as stand alones or do you need to go in order?

Niewood: The books are connected through the Noone family with Forgotten Violets being seen through Meadow Noone’s eyes and the sequel, The Wilted Flower District, experienced through the point of view of her daughter, Violet. With that said because of the gap in time between the first and second book it allows the reader to experience each book as a stand alone with a light connection attaching the two books together. There is no need to read the books in order as the reader will completely understand the events of both novels, regardless of the order in which they are read.

Q: Your books provide a “non-traditional view of the afterlife.” What does that mean, and what can readers expect?

Niewood: I think that when people ponder about the universe and the afterlife they have a cemented image of what happens after you die. One of the great things about The Wilted Flower District is that it causes the reader to question those beliefs and gives you a fantastical world where anything is possible. Let’s face it, the only thing that any of us really know about death and an afterlife is that eventually we all have to face it and face it alone. Of course, not everyone believes in the hereafter but many take comfort in the existence of another dimension, which I call the Domain that allows our spirits to continue to grow after death. In The Wilted Flower District, I tried to create a world in which the protagonist, Violet, is able to face challenges that allow her to confront her shortcomings and develop her strengths.

Q: What relevance does The Wilted Flower District have to teens today? 

Niewood: I think that the beauty of The Wilted Flower District is that it allows the reader to focus on the important things in life. The Domain is a world filled with negativity and adversity that mirrors our own while simultaneously offering the hope that regardless of what happens in life, you need to keep moving forward. Many of Violet’s challenges are shared by teens today. Although most teens don’t encounter siblings that they believed to be dead or be stand accused of horrific murders, all teens do face situations in which their core beliefs are challenged and they feel misjudged by adults. Like Violet, teens are apt to keep secrets from their parents and experience feelings of exclusion when she unravels her brother’s lies. The teen years can be very confusing but somehow like Violet, we survive the angst and insecurities and emerge, hopefully, as better people.

Q: What inspired you to write The Wilted Flower District in first person? 

Niewood: I thought the best way to experience the massive and unusual world of the Domain and specifically the city of Fairhaven where the story takes place was through Violet’s eyes. I believed that the audience would develop a deeper connection with Violet if they could experience the crazy and mysterious events through Violet rather than from an omniscient third person point of view. Since this is a mystery, I wanted to limit what the reader knew to what Violet knew or thought that she knew.

Q: Although you stayed in first person, why did you change from Meadow’s to Violet’s point of view?

Niewood: After I had written Forgotten Violets, my initial thought was to continue with Meadow’s journey in the Domain. However, when I sat down and started thinking about it Fairhaven had modernized into a very different world and in order for the story to work in this new city, there had to be a large time gap in my story. By then, Meadow would have been too old to serve as the protagonist in a YA novel, so I decided to tell the story through the eyes of her daughter, Violet. For the Forgotten Violetseries, this also allowed me to expand my worldview and for future books to delve into the mystery of Meadow’s disappearance.

Q: What do you want the reader to take away from this story?

Niewood: The thing that I want readers, especially teens, to take away from this story is to believe in yourself because we each shape our own reality and control our own destinies. Today’s world is filled with hate and negativity but I believe that Violet can show people that if you remain positive and believe in yourself you can accomplish whatever you can dream. There is no denying that indifference and greed permeate our world but each of us has the power to transform our environment positively with determination and kindness.

MARTIN NIEWOOD lives just outside of Philadelphia where he is a full-time writer. He attended Johnson & Wales University before moving to Los Angeles to work in the talent industry. An avid sports fan, Niewood loves all Philadelphia teams but especially the Eagles. His writing partner is his dog, Mattie.
