Kevin Can Wait Gets Us Laughing Monday Night 8pm on CBS!kevincanwaitIf there is one thing the world needs it’s just to turn on the tv and laugh. Life if tough and it’s great to be able to find a show that can just free you up for a little while and get the chuckles flowing. Kevin Can Wait is a new CBS show that stars Kevin James as a newly retired police officer. In the sitcom he plays hubby- Kevin, which makes it so easy for people like me who can never remember names. Kevin has big plans to hang around with his wife, three kids and other officers but finds out pretty quickly that life has a lot more in store for him. Kevin can wait is a family friendly show which makes it easy to watch because you can have it on with everyone in the house awake. Bravo, CBS!

kevin1kevin4Recently we were invited to hang out with director, Andy Fickman, tv hubby and wife- Kevin James and Erinn Hayes. It was pure pleasure listening to them tell stories about life, the show and the set. I kind of felt like I was having coffee with some old friends!  Following our conversation, Andy gave us a tour of the set! We were privy to some exclusive information about the tricks used on set and how the show is filmed in front of a live audience. I would love to be a part of that someday- so many laughs I’m sure! As Andy showed us around he clued us in to how the framed pictures on set were actual family pictures of all the actors including Kevin James’ high school football photo. kevin10kevin9During our time with the three members of Kevin Can Wait, I asked a couple questions about the brand-new sitcom. This is what they had to say:

3decades3kids: What’s the biggest difference between working on a television show, and working on a movie?

Erinn: In a movie, you’re telling one story, and it’s a very particular story and everything is there to tell that one theme, or that one thing that you’re speaking to. [On Kevin Can Wait] Every week you could learn something new about your character, and you’re really going into it to explore the lives of these people and it’s very interesting to see “Oh I wonder what Season 3 could look like / I wonder what new things — you can always just keep adding to your character because you’re telling a new story each week.”

Kevin: “With every movie I’ve done, there’s always stuff you look back on and go “Ooh, I did that horribly,” or “I wish I could have done that better this way,” and, in a way, I do that with the TV show too, you see episodes, but you have a chance each week, it’s like a new play each week, so you have that opportunity to do it again, which is kinda cool as the same character…

Erinn: “I think why TV shows get better is as you sit into the character and the writers have more time to develop the characters and what makes them interesting / what makes them funny, the show gets funnier because it becomes much more specific.”

Kevin: “And it’s a rhythm thing, too, because of the live audience. After you do the show for a while and you go out and do a movie, you’re looking for that laugh and it’s not there, and you start doubting yourself. But once you learn, you remember “Oh, ok. This is the way it’s gotta be, you’ve gotta trust you’re instincts.” But here it’s great, because I’ve missed a live audience. and I think a TV show is the perfect bridge between doing live stand-up, where it’s just you and an audience, and doing movies — it’s like a perfect middle step.”

3decades3kids: What is your favorite part of working on the show?

Andy Fickman: …assuming that working with Andy Fickman is one of them!

Erinn: “I really like coming in, rehearsing, and getting down to the nitty-gritty of what’s fun and what’s funny in a scene, and messing around before the cameras come in and you’re more free. That’s what I like about this kind of job.

Kevin: It is a challenge every week that you get to be better and do funnier stuff. And it’s so great to see the cast, like, I know what I do and my goofy little tricks and this and that, but it’s them and the fact that they bring different stuff that allows me to be different off of them. You can do different stuff with them. And they’re so great and bring such a unique energy that I haven’t worked with before, and it fuels us. It’s the challenge of week-to-week. We’re shooting this week on a Thursday. It’s a four-day week and we’ve, you know, got been behind on scripts and we’re trying to get these things right, and it’s finding it when it works and you feel it, and you trust it, and you get that it feels like it’s funny, and it’s got the rhythm that you want and then seeing that come to fruition on a Friday, or in this case, a Thursday night is great.”

We are also shown the permanent set rooms and the temporary rooms that are created weekly around what is needed to fulfill the episode’s demand. The pictures above will be part of the set makeover for Monday 10/31/16 Halloween episode. They really make the entire set into a place you would believe is a full house even though the rooms are side by side. All windows are able to be switched out at any point in time. It’s an incredible place to visit if you have never been on set before. There is a sign that reads, “Hot Set” meaning that all things on the set cannot be touched since filming is or will be taking place. So Monday night, I think you know where this family will be at 8pm! Have fun checking out, Kevin Can Wait on CBS! I love Kevin James’ shows! I’ve been watching this new one & it is just as funny as King of Queens, so I bet he has a winner here.
